Glad to hear you found the solution to your problem. Which CMS were you using when this happened? Normally speaking, you would have cleaned up magic quotes before you did any processing with it. If you're inputting the data into the database, please use mysql_real_escape_string()

BTW, would built in magic quotes detection be useful for HTML Purifier? The algorithm would be:

if (addslashes(stripslashes($text)) == $text) $text = stripslashes($text);
